The Dooley Sump

The Dooley Sump came into being for the sole purpose of saving the expensive fiber optic cable from damage during a cabinet knockdown along a roadway.  It is a sump in the cabinet's concrete foundation  that is smaller than the dimensions of the cabinet sides.  The conduits still enter the bottom of the cabinet as usual, they are just 8-12" lower.  This basement arrangement allows space for the incoming fiber optic branch cable (usually a 6 or 12 fiber) to be terminated and coiled in the sump so that the cable does not extend above the concrete foundation.  In the event of a knockdown, the fiber patch cords will break and leave the branch cable undisturbed.

The New Mini Bracket

The branch cable fibers are usually prepared with a "break-out" kit that buffers the fibers up from 1/4mm to 3mm in diameter and surround them with kevlar.  The break-out kit has a single hole "P" clamp that holds the body of the kit to the side wall of the Sump.  The break out fibers are then connectorized with singlemode ST connectors, attached to the bottom side of a DooleySump Mini Bracket and then the appropriate patchcords are attached to the top side of the mini-bracket.  These connections can all be made while holding the Mini Bracket in your hand.  This makes it easy to see that you have made the connections correctly.  No more laying on you belly, trying to see down into the sump to make connections.  You can even temporarily lay the mini-bracket on the bottom shelf of the cabinet and continue to hook the patchcords to a test set or to the transceivers and verify that everything is working properly.

When you are satisfied that the fiber connection are correct, you lower the connected mini-bracket into the sump and attach it to any available side wall with a 1/4" or 3/8" anchor.  The patchcord side of the bracket should always be facing up.  You do not have to torque the anchor bolt down tightly, use a nut driver and just get it snug enough so that the bracket will remain in an upright position.

The Bracket comes pre-loaded with either 6 or 12 single mode ST couplers, depending on your needs.  The Couplers are quality zinc plated bronze units with special caps to keep out dust and water.
